Since its first edition in 2017, VivaTech has offered us the AfricaTech programme, highlighting the most influential African startups. This year, we had the pleasure of attending the first edition of the AfricaTech Awards, a pan-African initiative developed to recognise and support startups impacting three key sectors: ClimateTech, HealthTech and FinTech.
Mboa Digital, based in Yaoundé, is a community project that stands out for its innovative approach to the brain drain in Africa. Its aim is to reconcile employment and digital transition by offering young Cameroonian engineers the opportunity to participate in the digital transformation of local and international businesses. By anchoring these talents on the continent, Mboa Digital is helping to build a promising professional future for ambitious young Africans who previously saw exile as their only option for success.
Since 2016, Rwanda has embraced drones to revolutionise access to healthcare, enabling the rapid delivery of blood and vaccines to even the most remote areas. This innovation, led by the American company Zipline, based in Muhanga, continues beyond there. Drones are now playing a crucial role in agriculture and food distribution, transforming the daily lives of Rwandans. Inspired by this success, Kenya follows suit, using these technologies to deliver vaccines, illustrating a rapidly expanding model in East Africa.
The African continent is increasingly establishing itself as a major player on the global technology scene. For several years now, Africa has been experiencing a technological effervescence marked by rapid growth in various sectors, including information and communication technologies, fintech, innovative start-ups and artificial intelligence.
The African High Tech world was in Paris last month. These startups of Kenya, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria among others were eager to showcase their technologies and discover the new features presented at the eighth edition of the Vivatech Technology Fair. They were also interested in the possibilities for partnerships and networking within an international ecosystem which is discovering the potential of the African market. The event was dominated by the arrival of artificial intelligence that some of the continent’s startups are starting to adopt.
