{"id":448,"date":"2021-09-26T15:11:18","date_gmt":"2021-09-26T13:11:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/africa-on-air.com\/the-piece-still-missing-in-africas-csr-solutions\/"},"modified":"2022-08-04T15:23:14","modified_gmt":"2022-08-04T13:23:14","slug":"the-piece-still-missing-in-africas-csr-solutions","status":"publish","type":[9],"link":"https:\/\/africa-on-air.com\/en\/economy-en\/2021\/09\/the-piece-still-missing-in-africas-csr-solutions\/","title":{"rendered":"The piece still missing in Africa&#8217;s CSR solutions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">African organizations are stuck in a rut. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Resources and human efforts are wasted, the youth lack career prospects, the old retire without pensions, and women feel the sting of workplace discrimination. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">To be sure, these problems are not only confined to profit-seeking organizations. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">They are found in the likes of hospitals and schools as well.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Indeed, African organizations require major changes. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">These changes, I maintain, cannot be achieved by Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) alone. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Instead, the vehicle that will lead Africa to a profound transformation in values, economic behavior, and quality of life is <\/span><\/span><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">technology<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> . <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">This technology is called management (the definition of technology is the application of knowledge to human work).<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Management: a vehicle of change <\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">&#8220;While there is no shortage of talent in Africa, there is a critical lack of business and management skills&#8221; &#8211; <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.africanmanagers.org\/about\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">African Management Initiative<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/em><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">For the average African worker, CSR appears as a heavy dressing of humanitarian rhetoric or a pleasant but unessential relish. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">What African workers require is a practice and discipline that can lead to immediate results:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>African workers need \u201cemployeeship.\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In Nigeria, Africa\u2019s most populous country, employment is ambiguous, unorganized, and unprotected. Informal workers make 80% of the workforce (source: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/middle-east-and-africa\/2021\/09\/09\/nigeria-is-struggling-to-get-informal-workers-to-save\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Economist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Management is needed to create strong contractual relationships and morally decisive realms, in which people can earn a stable income and work together &#8211;\u00a0 through strictly impersonal objectives &#8211; to contribute to a meaningful purpose.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>African workers need higher wages.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> To be clear, wages need to increase by at least 100%. In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the second largest country in Africa by size, 70% of the population lives on less than $1.90 a day and the average worker earns less than $400 a year (source: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/country\/drc\/overview\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Bank<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/the-23-poorest-countries-in-the-world-2015-7?r=US&amp;IR=T#:~:text=The%20Democratic%20Republic%20of%20Congo,average%20of%20%24105%2C091.42%20a%20year.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business Insider<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Management is needed to systematically study tasks and to ensure that the right tools are being integrated into organizations. It is also needed to increase productivity, as this enables workers to receive more benefits for their work.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>African workers need a scientific selection process. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organizations need to employ talent, diversity, and competition &#8211; wherever possible. In Ethiopia, the only country on the continent that has never been colonized, state-owned monopolies still undermine free competition and stifle creativity. This is the case in the telecommunications sector, for example (source: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/deabd4ae-4bc0-4b41-bb25-cebec2ddc560\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financial Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Government officials and policy makers are ill suited to decide who or what should grow or satisfy the needs, aspirations, and expectations of tomorrow\u2019s business world. This is the task of management.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>CSR is the consequence of management<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>CSR is best understood as a niche rather than a generic strategy<\/em>&#8221; &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/marketforvirtue_chapter.pdf\">Brookings<\/a><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although CSR is used interchangeably with management perhaps, it is as different from it as cement is from concrete.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For more than 100 years, the best and brightest have been talking about \u201cThe Social Responsibilities of Business,\u201d beginning with industrialists like Shibusawa Eiichi (Japan), Seebohm Rowntree (UK), and Walther Rathenau (Germany). However, not until the conception of \u201cScientific Management\u201d in the 1900s as well as the \u201cmanagement boom\u201d in the 1950s were leaders able to incorporate CSR solutions in their management strategies for social and environmental issues (recommended: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2014\/07\/managements-three-eras-a-brief-history\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harvard Business Review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">All told, Management is a powerful knowledge that can help African workers and organizations overcome struggles, environmental catastrophes, and traumatic events. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">It is unique because it draws together knowledge from different disciplines, including psychology, philosophy, and history, to make societies more affluent and sustainable.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">African organizations need the application of modern management above everything else, if they seek a more social, more responsible, and more prosperous future.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>African organizations are stuck in a rut.
